Belgrade, Serbia – June 18, 2019 – Two employees from MERA, a software services company headquartered in Switzerland with an R&D center in Belgrade, participated in a pro-bono project executed by the GuideMe organization. The initiative combined forces of well-experienced mobile engineers from various Serbian IT companies to create a mobile app that would enable easier orientation for visually impaired people in a modern environment. The application was developed in cooperation with actual users and received the name GuideMe.
GuideMe is designed for blind and visually impaired persons to facilitate their orientation while carrying out daily activities in the external environment such as navigating public spaces, using public services or doing tasks that require physical presence of a particular person. In case the end-user needs assistance in a facility, they may use the app to read a QR code in a predetermined location in public institutions. The app then provides the user with voice messages that will communicate the necessary information or guide the person to the desired destination.
At the beginning of June, the beta application was piloted in the Museum of Contemporary Art of Belgrade at an exhibition ‘In touch with’, organized with an aim to visualize the beauty of art for people with sight impairment through audio description. The visitors could listen to audio tracks by scanning the QR code next to each section. If interested to try out, download the app from the Google Play Store.
