Developing Mobile Solution for Remote Vital Signs Monitoring


The customer is a North American start-up, developing a state-of-the-art healthcare solution based on IoT and wearable technologies. A miniature non-invasive biosensor on a patient’s body was supposed to provide a full range of the user’s vital signs - all this remotely and through an easy-to-use web interface or a mobile application.


MERA experts were to join the customer’s team to be involved in the whole development cycle, from creating algorithms and infrastructure and to designing а web portal and mobile clients for both iOS and Android. MERA had to perform the task within a strict time frame because the customer intended to bring the new solution to market as soon as possible.


MERA quickly built up a team, skilled in all the aspects of the development process. MERA experts applied the latest cloud computing technologies to build an innovative platform with unique capabilities in continuous vital signs measurement and monitoring.

The monitoring platform is based on the principle of reflectance pulse oximetry with proprietary innovations in sensor design, low power consumption, wireless communications, signal-processing algorithms, and data processing.

An ultra-small low-power wireless sensor is easy to place and ware. Data from the sensor is streamed to a mobile app over Bluetooth 4.0 (BLE) and then to the cloud web service over Wi-Fi or 3G. The end-user can access real-time measurements of vital parameters via the application on their iPhone, iPad or Android device or using a web browser.


The MERA team completed the project on time, meeting all the customer’s requirements. Apart from monitoring main vital signs, the solution calculates steps and burned calories and detects specific movements like falls, making it ideally suited not only for medical purposes but also for achieving personal fitness goals and remote monitoring of children.

Soon after the launch of the platform, MERA engineers extended the functionality of the solution, making it even more competitive at the rapidly growing mobile fitness and healthcare market.
